Update on Searching (by Thom)
(Note: because of the sensitive nature of this entry several specific details have been left intentionally vague.)
A month ago I wrote about our substitute language teacher. I asked for prayer because he seems to honestly searching for something more in his life. He is starting to realize his religion is hollow and doesn't provide any sort of hope.
I met with him again last week. It was the first time I've seen him since early November. He is doing very well and has been reading through the Bible. He came to be my language substitute again (just for one day) but the only language lesson I had was a practical one: he had many, many specific questions about Jesus and Christianity. Specifically he asked me about what sort of things are required of followers of Jesus. For followers of a religion that demands specific acts to have a chance at heaven it is a radical notion that Jesus wants to give the free gift of salvation and that He already paid the price of sacrifice. The teacher then made a bold statement. He said he's been reading through the Bible and he's seeing that everything in the Old Testament points to Jesus. Even more, everything after the Gospels in the New Testament points back at Jesus. For a person of his faith to make this statement is nothing short of the miracle of the Holy Spirit working in his heart!
At the end of class he asked me if I could give any advice to someone who wasn’t a Christian. I translated John 14:6 from memory (and did a pretty good job at it!): Jésus lui dit: Je suis le chemin, la vérité, et la vie. Nul ne vient au Père que par moi.
I'd like to ask for continued prayer for this man who continues to seek Truth. He has said that he'd like to come to church with some mutual friends this Christmas. I pray that his ears and his heart will hear the words of the Lord and he will be open to them.
